Occupying Serie A for all but two seasons since its conception in 1899, Associazione Calcio Milan (or AC Milan for short) are loved by fans throughout Italy and all over the world. It started out as a local football club set up by two English expatriates in 1899. Since then the club has consistently topped league tables and broken dozens of footballing records both in their native Italy and on an international level.
AC Milan are the proud owners of 18 FIFA and UEFA trophies – the fourth highest number of any club, and the most compared with their fellow Italian clubs. Other achievements include a FIFA Club World Cup title, 7 Champions League titles (the current record holders in Italy) and 5 UEFA Super Cups. They also hold a joint record with Real Madrid for three Intercontinental Cups. With so many triumphs under their belts, it’s perhaps not so surprising that AC Milan is the second-most successful club in Italy’s premier league, Serie A, after Juventus. In Italy alone they have won the Coppa Italia five times, and are seven-time winners of the Supercoppa Italiana.
The club holds a famous and long-running rivalry with neighbours Inter (Internazionale). Local clashes are nicknamed ‘Derby della Madonnina’ – each attracting huge crowds which make them some of the biggest and most highly anticipated derbies around.
