MMA stands for Mixed Martial Arts and is sometimes known as cage fighting, due to the fighters competing in a ‘cage’. It is also known as NHB (no holds barred) or ultimate fighting. MMA is a combat sport with full contact including striking, fighting on the ground and grappling. It incorporates techniques from different combat sports and martial arts.

There have been a number of fighting contests across the world. In Brazil, Vale Tudo was a style of Brazilian jiu-jitsu. In the West there was Bartitsu which was based on Boxing, Wrestling, Judo, Ju Jitsu, French Savate and La Canne. In the East, there were various styles across Japan and the Four Asian Tiger countries (Singapore, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan). Bruce Lee popularised the combination of multiple martial arts in the 1960s and 1970s.

The Ultimate Fighting Competition (UFC) was founded in the United States by the Gracie family with very little rules. Additional rules were added later to ensure competitor’s safety and also help commercialise the sport. It is now a hugely successful sport that is watched across the world.
