Ulster Rugby competes in the Pro14 and the European Rugby Champions Cup. They are one of four provincial rugby teams from Ireland (the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland). The team represents the province of Ulster which spans across Northern Island and the Republic of Ireland. It consists of three counties on the Republic of Ireland including Donegal, Monaghan and Cavan. There are six counties in Northern Island including Tyrone, Londonderry, Down, Armagh, Antrim and Fermanagh.

Ulster became the first Irish team to win the Heineken Cup in 1999 when they beat the French US Colomiers in the final. This was a huge achievement for the Ulstermen. The team had good success between 1999 and 2006, winning the 2005-2006 PRO14 league.

They experienced a decline from 2006 to 2010 before signing a number of good players in 2010 to help bolster the squad. This included Ruan Pienaar, the 2007 Rugby World Cup Winner from South Africa. They reached the Heineken Cup Final in 2012, losing to Leinster at Twickenham. Ulster finished as Runners-Up in the 2019-2020 Pro14 Conference A. They are also in a Runners-Up position again, behind Leinster in the 2020-2021 season.
