Alan Shearer is a retired professional footballer who now works as a TV football pundit. He was a prolific goalscorer and is the current Premier League all-time top scorer. He had the characteristics of a traditional English striker, such was his strength, ability to head a ball, stature and extremely hard-hitting shot. His ability to head a ball was proven by the fact almost a quarter of his 206 goals for Newcastle were headers. Shearer was also an expert penalty taker, scoring 45 penalties for Newcastle and five goals from direct free-kicks.

Shearer joined Southampton in 1988 before moving to Blackburn Rovers 4 years later in 1992. At Blackburn, he won the Premier League title in 1994-1995 and won two consecutive Golden Boots. He joined his boyhood club for a world-record transfer fee at the time of £15 million. Shearer went on to become a firm fan’s favourite with the Geordies. He led them to the 1998 and 1999 FA Cup Finals and eventually became the club’s all-time record goalscorer.

Shearer represented England 63 times, scoring 30 goals. He won the Golden Boot at Euro 1996 when England reached the semi-finals. They eventually got knocked out by Germany on penalties. Since retiring in 2006, the football legend has become a well-respected TV pundit for the BBC. He also took on the managerial role at Newcastle for a short period in 2009 in an attempt to save them from relegation.
