Wayne Rooney is a former professional footballer who was hugely successful in his career and was a world-class player. The football legend is now currently the manager of the English Football League side, Derby County. He was previously player-manager for the club, on a temporary basis. Rooney has managed the club since 2020.
Rooney played the majority of his playing career as a forward, although also played in midfield. The football superstar was recognised as one of the greatest players in the world when he was playing. He holds a number of goalscoring records, including being the record goalscorer for both the England national football team and Manchester United. Rooney is the 2nd most capped English player, scoring 53 goals in 120 appearances for his country. The United superstar scored 253 goals in 559 appearances for the Manchester club.

Rooney started his career at boyhood club, Everton. He joined the Merseyside club when he was nine and played in the youth team. Rooney made his pro debut in 2002 aged just 16. He made an immediate impact for the club, spending two seasons in the first team. Such were his performances, it earned him a transfer to Manchester United for almost £26 million in 2004. Rooney won an astonishing 16 major trophies at United playing between 2004 and 2017. These include 5 Premier League titles, 3 English Football League Cups, 1 FA Cup, 4 FA Community Shields, 1 UEFA Champions League, 1 UEFA Europa League, and 1 FIFA Club World Cup. He also won numerous individual awards including BBC Youngs Sports Personality of the Year, Premier League Player of the Season, PFA Players’ Player of the Year, to name but a few.
Rooney is the all-time record Premier League goalscorer, scoring 208 Premier League goals. He has also amassed 103 Premier League assists, the 3rd highest of all time. These stats helped Rooney make his full England debut aged just 17 and become the national team’s youngest goalscorer of all time. Rooney is the 2nd highest capped English player of all time and has played at all the major international tournaments. He featured in three World Cups in 2006, 2010, and 2014. Rooney scored 4 goals at UEFA Euro 2004 and has won Player of The Year for England four times.
