Manchester United FC

Manchester United was formed in 1878 and is one of the oldest in the English Premiership. Starting out as Newton Heath LYR Football Club, it changed its name to Manchester United in 1902. It moved across town to its current location in Stretford’s Old Trafford in 1910. The ground has developed massively over the years and now has a capacity of almost 80,000 seated fans.

Manchester United is not simply a football club – it’s now a multi-billion dollar business and successful global brand. Season tickets for Manchester United attract a hefty price tag – up to £950 for one years’ membership. Merchandise is equally pricey – with the club estimated to earn almost £500m from its adoring fans all over the world.

The club has enjoyed a number of astonishing runs. They became known as The ‘Busby Babes’ during the glory years of 1945-1969 when Sir Matt Busby was at the helm. The club nearly collapsed in 1958 when 8 of its players and 15 officials and journalists were killed in the Munich air disaster. It devastated the club. Busby rebuilt his team throughout the 1960s signing star players like George Best, Denis Law, Paddy Crerand and Bobby Charlton.

Manchester United rebounded strongly under Alex Ferguson in 1986 when club into the upper echelons of world football. He transformed the club into a powerhouse, winning 38 major trophies, including 13 Premier League titles and two UEFA Champions League titles. He focused on youth development leading to the famous ‘Class of ’92’, featuring world class players such as David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, and Paul Scholes. He later nurtured stars such as Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand. He left an indelible legacy at Manchester United.
