South-African born Chris Froome OBE has become a British cycling legend, and is widely regarded as one of the UK’s most prolific professional cyclists. ‘Froomey’ (as he is affectionately known) is considered to be one of the greatest stage racing cyclists of all time.

He was born in Nairobi, Kenya to British parents, who kept life at home as close as possible to their English roots. This partly contributed to a young Froome’s initial interest in professional cycling, and at the age of 13 he attended his first organised bike race. He won despite being knocked off his bike by his mother – a sign perhaps of what was to come and a preview of his unbridled success even in the face of adversity. This meeting kickstarted his career, after meeting professional cyclist David Kinjah. He became Froome’s mentor and training partner – a relationship which was both influential and instrumental in the young cyclist’s future success. He began to cycle in a serious sense, but didn’t turn professional until he was 22.  During this time he decided he would prefer to ride under a British licence under the Union Flag – since he ‘had always carried a British passport, and felt British.’ Within just five years he experienced his first major breakthrough – and in 2013 came his very first Tour de France victory.

Chris Froome’s achievements are numerous and impressive. He has won the Tour de France a remarkable four times – in 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017 – plus two podium appearances either side of his winning streak in 2012 and 2018. In 2016 he was honoured with an OBE for his services to cycling. Renowned and respected throughout the industry, he has shown steely determination and professionalism even in the face of illness, injury and speculation over his true abilities. Froome shows no signs of stopping yet – in fact he has recently announced continued and renewed interest in trophies from tours around the world, and a desire to help Sky teammates to triumph too.
