Rugby has long been a beloved sport in England – both recreationally and professionally. It was founded here in 1823 as a spin-off from football, and quickly gained popularity. In 1870 the Rugby Football Union (more commonly known as the RFU) was founded, and with that competition in the sport began to gather pace. Traditionally rugby union was a sport associated with the middle and upper classes, predominantly played in the south of England. But as the sport grows in popularity it is gaining strength and support up and down the country.
Top-level rugby is played in the Premiership. Just 12 teams occupy the top spot. English rugby union’s most hotly anticipated tournament is the Six Nations Cup or Heineken Cup, now known as the European Rugby Champions Cup.
England’s track record at home in the UK is well-respected – and it holds fierce rivalries with neighbours Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Top teams compete in the Premiership Rugby Cup. Other UK competitions include the Anglo-Welsh Cup and British and Irish Cup. Meanwhile the British and Irish Lions hold a respectable scoresheet of wins against Australia, South Africa and New Zealand’s All Blacks. England’s national team currently holds the title of second-best team in the Six Nations Championship, with three titles and one Grand Slam to its name. In World Rugby England is ranked a respectable third out of all 95 participating nations.
