Floyd Joy Mayweather Junior was born in 1977 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is a former professional boxer and now operates as a professional boxing promoter. The boxing legend was named ‘Fighter of the Decade’ for the 2010’s by the BWAA (Boxing Writer’s Association of America). He is regarded as the best defensive boxer in the history of boxing. Mayweather also has the accolade of being the most accurate puncher. Many sporting institutions rank Mayweather as the best pound for pound boxer in the world.

Mayweather was born Floyd Joy Sinclair. He was born with his mother’s surname initially and soon changed it to his father’s name. Boxing was a huge part of Floyd’s life since childhood and his potential was quickly spotted. He was brought up in New Jersey and would share a bedroom with seven other people, often without electricity. He went to live with his grandmother after his father was sent to jail and his mother was addicted to drugs. Boxing became an outlet for Mayweather and he was to drop out of school, putting all of his energy into his boxing career and looking after his mom.

The boxing superstar had a strong amateur record of 84 wins and 8 losses. Due to his defensive techniques he had very few scars so was nicknamed ‘Pretty Boy’. He won a bronze medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Mayweather then went on to fight professionally in 1996 in the Super Featherweight Division. He gradually moved up the divisions to Lightweight, Light Welterweight, Welterweight, Light Middleweight and back to Welterweight. He would retire and then come back to light-middleweight. Mayweather would eventually retire three times after his victorious fight with Conor McGregor.

The boxing icon is the biggest pay-per-view attraction of all time. Mayweather has been classed as the highest-paid athlete in the world by the likes of Forbes, from 2012-2014. In 2018 he generated the highest salary of any athlete of approximately $275 million. He has said to have earned $1.67 billion in revenue throughout his career. Mayweather alone has generated 24 million pay-per-view buys, more than any other sportsman. He has a record of 26 consecutive wins in world title fights. He remains undefeated with 50 wins from 50 fights, of these 27 were knock-outs. A true boxing legend who currently resides in luxury in a Las Vegas mansion. He is nicknamed ‘Money’ for a reason!
