Officially known as Bayer 04 Leverkusen Fußball GmbH, the club was founded in 1904 by employees of the world reknowned pharmaceutical company. Playing in a red and black stripes (with the ‘Bayer’ cross visible on their shirts), they are long standing members of Germany’s Bundesliga. After many years playing third and fourth division football, Bayer Leverkusen ascended to the league in 1979 and by the 1980’s established an upper half place for the rest of the decade, winning the prestigious UEFA Cup in 1988. They secured the title on penalty kicks against Espanyol.
A loss of form in the ’90’s saw them almost relegated in 1996, but they powered back under new Coach Christoph Daum, who signed players such as Emerson and Zé Roberto. Over the next decade they had many near successes, reaching the quarter finals of UEFA Cup in 2008 and 2019/20.
In 2022 Leverkusen who were in the relegation zone, took a big chance in appointing Xabi Alonso as their head coach, as he had not held a senior position before. It was a risk that paid off, with him guiding the club to their first ever victory in the Bundesliga in 2024. The season included an unbeaten run of 48 games, breaking the UEFA period record, held by Benfica since 1965!
