Club History

Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, commonly known as Spurs, is a renowned English football club based in north London. Founded in 1882, the team has etched its name in the annals of English football, consistently challenging for top honours and earning the admiration of fans worldwide.

The club’s name and nickname, “Spurs,” are derived from Sir Henry Percy, a 14th-century English nobleman who was nicknamed “Hotspur” for his fiery temperament and military prowess. Hotspur’s emblem, a cockerel standing on a football, with the Latin motto “Audere est Facere” (“To Dare Is to Do”), reflects the club’s unwavering spirit and ambition.

Tottenham’s home ground has evolved significantly over the years,  they settled at Northumberland Park in 1888 and moved to White Hart Lane in 1899, a ground that has become synonymous with Spurs’ identity.

In 1923, Tottenham achieved their first major trophy, winning the FA Cup. They further cemented their legacy with league titles in 1951 and 1961, as well as two FA Cups in 1967 and 1981. The club also reached the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1972, losing to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 1990s marked a period of transition for Tottenham, as they struggled to maintain their former dominance. However, they regained their footing in the new millennium, reaching the 2008 League Cup final and the Champions League final in 2019, losing to Liverpool in both competitions.

Tottenham’s recent successes have been built on a foundation of talented players, such as Harry Kane, Gareth Bale, and Hugo Lloris.

Recent years have seen a revolving door of managers. After Pochettino was fired in 2019, José Morinho was fired after just five months. Nuno Espírito Santo was brought in and lasted just four months. Antonino Conte lasted longer, guiding the club to a fourth place and a Champions League position in 2023 but after a poor run was replaced by Ange Postecoglou.

Signed Tottenham Shirts

Spurs started their career playing in navy blue shirts, and went through a variety of colours, including sky blue and white and orange and yellow before settling on the classic combination of navy and white in 1889-90. The cockerel was added just after the first world war, and was a reference to Sir Henry Hotspur who owned the site of the original ground at Northumberland Park. Tottenham shirts have gone through a myriad of changes over the years, but the current AIA sponsored white shirts with blue touches doesn’t veer too far away from the core design.
