In 2003 Chelsea was bought by high-profile Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich after the club fund themselves suffering a financial crisis. He spent more than £100m on new players bringing in José Mourinho in 2004. He won the Premier League, the FA Cup and two league cups during his spell at the club. He was fired in 2007 but then returned in the 2013, then sacked a second time in 2015. In total, Mourinho won six trophies during his two spells at Chelsea FC. He is the most successful manager in the club’s history.
Frank Lampard took over but failed to reignite the fire. He achieved some success in his first season, but was ultimately unable to sustain it. He was criticized for his management style, which some felt was too inexperienced. However, Lampard remains a popular figure at Chelsea, and his appointment as caretaker manager in April 2023 was met with widespread approval.
Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine Abromovich handed the ownership of Chelsea FC to trustees of the Chelsea Foundation writing off the £1.5bn that was owed to him by the club, and in May 2022 the club was old to consortium of Todd Boehly, Clearlake Capital, Mark Walter and Hansjörg Wyss. In 2022 they won the FIFA Club World Cup and spent a record £289m on new players, spending £107m on Enzo Fernandez, breaking the British transfer record. In may 2023 they finished 12th in the Premiership with Argentinian Mauricio Pochettino took over as head coach
