Moto GP, or Grand Prix motorcycle racing, is the world’s premier class competitive motorcycle tournament. Fan, collector or simply an enthusiast? Find exclusive signed Moto GP memorabilia here at Firma Stella.
A relatively young sport, Moto GP was developed in Europe in the 1940s. It has a reputation as one of the fastest and most dangerous sports on the planet, thanks to the high-power, high-speed machines that participate. Until 2002 the maximum engine class allowed was 500cc – now bikes with up to 1000cc can compete. Lower ‘leagues’ also exist – these include Moto2 and Moto3 championships.
Just like car racing, Moto GP tournaments are attended by teams including Yamaha, Ducati, Honda and Suzuki, who craft slick superbikes able to reach speeds of up to 150mph. Each year the MotoGP tours around the world to locations including Qatar, France, Germany, Spain, Australia, Thailand and the USA. Riders compete to win the coveted trophy and an undisclosed sum of prize money, which is said to have totalled hundreds of thousands of pounds (if not more) in 2018. Many races, teams and riders are sponsored or run by adrenalin sports giants Red Bull and Monster Energy. Over one billion people worldwide tune in to watch this high-drama, super-fast motorcycle races – with even more travelling to witness the action live. The sport’s popularity is widely disputed, with some experts suggesting that Moto GP is even more popular than Formula One.
