Shop for signed football shirts from all of the world’s greatest players and teams. It’s a widely unknown fact that the kit used to play football is governed by the rules of the game. These rules range from how large the logo is allowed to be on the football shirt to the length of the shorts! There mustn’t be anything on the kit which may prove a danger to either the player or an opponent. It is also a rule that should two teams of the same colour face each other then the away team must change its colours to its away kit, which must be of a different colour!
The first evidence of an item of football kit was from 1540 when Henry VIII was reported to be the first person to play the game with a pair of football boots. Coloured football jerseys were first heard of in 1840 when teams played at public schools. The colours were used much like house colours at school to define opposing teams. Clearly, it wouldn’t make sense having players in the same coloured football shirts as they wouldn’t know who to pass to from any reasonable distance!
With organised football commencing in the 1860’s it became common for teams to adopt standard colours. With no numbers being sewn onto the shirts until much later, players were identified by the colour of their caps or long socks!
In 1890 the Football League developed rules which included teams having to wear different coloured football shirts. By the 1970s teams had developed firm identities and the old-style woollen shirts and knickerbockers were a thing of the past. The collecting of sporting autographs took off in the same decade with supporters hanging around after the match in the hope they could meet the players who would sign autograph books and pieces of memorabilia.
Major advances in garment technology came in the ’80s and ’90s with new materials being used to wick away moisture while keeping players cool in summer and warm in winter. Sponsorship also took off in a major way with huge international companies seeing the massive benefit in getting their logos on to football shirts, with games being broadcast worldwide.
