Birmingham City were formed in 1875 as Small Heath Alliance.  They were later renamed Small Heath in 1888 and Birmingham in 1905.  They were eventually named Birmingham City in 1943.  Birmingham have played at St.Andrews since 1906 and are nicknamed the blues, after their home kits.  Their fans are known as the Bluenoses.  The Blues’ main rivals are Aston Villa, their closest neighbours.

Birmingham City have played in the top flight of English football for around half of the time they have been around.  The longest period outside of the top league was between 1986 and 2002, which also included two spells in the 3rd tier of English football.  They did however win the Football League Trophy twice during this period.

Their most successful period was in the 1950s and 1960s where they reached their highest position of sixth in the First Division in 1955-56.  They also reached the FA Cup Final in 1956.  The Blues played in two Inter-Cities Fairs Cup Finals and became the first English football team to reach a major European final.  City won the League Cup in 1963 and once again in 2011.

The Blues have played in the EFL Championship since 2011.  Hong Kong based businessman Carson Yeung became owner in 2007.  He was later arrested and charged of money laundering.  The Blues went into administration in 2015 and were purchased later in the year by Trillion Trophy Asia.
