Ligue 1 Conforama to give it it’s full name, is the top flight league of French professional football.  The league is managed by the Ligue de Football Proffessionnel.  The league has 20 teams who play each other home and away each season, so a total of 38 league matches during any given season.  The playing season will start in August and conclude in May with games played most weekends, and occasionally during the week.  The league takes a break for two weeks over Christmas.  It is ranked fifth best in Europe by UEFA coefficient rankings.

Ligue 1 was formed in 1932 called National with 20 inaugural members. These 20 clubs were placed into two groups of 10, with the bottom 3 being relegated to Division 2.  The winners of each group would play-off in a final at a neutral venue.  Olympique Lillois were the first inaugral champions.  It changed its name to Division 1 after a year, and again to 2002 to Ligue 1.  This format has now changed and the league consists of 20 teams, rather than been placed into two groups.  Teams will be awarded three points for a win, one point for a draw and none for a loss.

The most successful French club is AS Saint Etienne with ten league titles.  Olympique Lyonnais have won the most consecutive titles of seven, between 2002 and 2008.  Olympique de Marseille have been in the top flight league for a record of 69 years.  PSG (Paris Saint-Germain) have been in the top flight since 1974, so 45 consecutive seasons.  They are also the current French champions having won their 9th title during the 2019-2020 season.  AS Monaco have also won their league, despite being foreign.  This therefore makes Ligue 1 a cross-border competition.

The Ligue 1 top goalscorer of all time is Delio Onnis with 299 goals, scoring most of these for Monaco.  Most Ligue 1 appearances goes to Mickael Landreau with 618 appearances.
