Bundesliga stalwarts Verein fur Leibesubungen Wolfsburg (most commonly known as Wolfsburg) may not be one of Germany’s most celebrated football teams – but they’re one of the most consistent fixtures in top-tier football. Over the years the club has attracted big stars including Edin Dzeko and Obafemi Martins.
VfL Wolfsburg’s history is almost as interesting as its recent achievements. It originally started as a multi-sports club for Volkswagen workers living in the city, which itself was founded to house factory workers who would eventually go on to build its iconic Beetle mode. The club is still owned by Volkswagen to this day. Its iconic and slightly unusual kit also has a funny story behind it. When the club was established in 1945 the coach has 10 green jerseys – so locals donated bed sheets which were then sewn together by players’ wives to make shorts. The first team plays in green and white at home to this day.
Over the years Wolfsburg has clinched one Bundesliga win, one DFB-Pokal and one DFL-Supercup. Despite their lack of trophies in recent years, they have consistently contributed not only to German football, but international sporting success. At the beginning of the 2015-2016 competitive season, Wolfsburg FC defeated champions Bayern Munich in the DFL Supercup. As the 2015 summer transfer window closed Wolfsburg sold Kevin de Bruyne to Manchester City for 75 million Euros – a Bundesliga record. In the following season forward Robert Lewandowski scored a phenomenal five goals in nine minutes in a record-breaking match against heavyweights Bayern Munich.
