The Olympic Games is the most popular and well-known sporting event in the world. The vast majority of the world is involved, with our 200 nations participating. The Olympics are held every four years in summer, whilst the Winter Olympics takes place every two years in the middle of the four year period.

The creation of the Olympics was based on the Ancient Olympic Games which were held in Olympia, Greece. The Ancient Games were held from the 8th Century BC to 4th Century AD. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) was created in 1894 by Baron Pierre de Coubertin. This led to the first modern Olympic Games held in Athens in 1896.

The Olympic Movement evolved in the 20th and 21s Centuries, driven by the IOC. It resulted in a number of changes to the Games. These included the launch of the Winter Olympics, the Paralympic Games, the Youth Olympic Games, the World Games, Deaflympics, the Special Olympics and the five Continental Games.

The Olympic Games have grown considerably that almost every nation is now included. The growth has also led to a number of challenges and controversies. These include boycotts, doping, bribery and even a terrorist attack in 1972
