History
Manchester United was formed in 1878 and is one of the oldest in the English Premiership. Starting out as Newton Heath LYR Football Club, it changed its name to Manchester United in 1902. It moved across town to its current location in Stretford’s Old Trafford in 1910. The ground has developed massively over the years and now has a capacity of almost 80,000 seated fans.
The club has own 20 league titles, 12 FA Cups, six League Cups, ad twenty one Community Shields. In Europe they have won three European Cup/UEFA Champions Leagues and the UEFA Europa League. They have won the UEFA Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup plus the FIFA Club World Cup.
Man Utd is the most valuable football club in the world with a capitalisation of just over £3.8bn. It was something of a rocky time when the Glazer family bought it in 2005, with some fans opposing the move. The takeover proved to be a smart move as they paid just £800m at the time.
Manchester United is not simply a football club – it’s now a multi-million dollar business and successful global brand. Season tickets for Manchester United attract a hefty price tag – up to £950 for one years’ membership. Merchandise is equally pricey – with the club estimated to earn almost £500m from its adoring fans all over the world.
The club has enjoyed a number of astonishing runs. They became known as The ‘Busby Babes’ during the glory years of 1945-1969 when Sir Matt Busby was at the helm. The club nearly collapsed in 1958 when 8 of its players and 15 officials and journalists were killed in the Munich air disaster. It devastated the club. Busby rebuilt his team throughout the 1960s signing star players like George Best, Denis Law, Paddy Crerand and Bobby Charlton.
They had a patchy time under subsequent managers who included Tommy Docherty and Dave Sexton in the 1970s, but retuned to the top flight under Ron Atkinson who signed Bryan Robson in 1981.
The club rebounded strongly under Alex Ferguson in 1986, who came down with his then assistant, Archie Knox from Aberdeen. The glory years started again as Ferguson took the club into the upper echelons of world football. He increased discipline at the club. He transformed the club into a powerhouse, winning 38 major trophies, including 13 Premier League titles and two UEFA Champions League titles. His reign was marked by his ability to rebuild successful teams, nurturing talent and instilling a winning mentality. He focused on youth development leading to the famous ‘Class of ’92’, featuring world class players such as David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, and Paul Scholes. He later nurtured stars such as Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand. Ferguson’s longevity and consistency cemented his status as one of the greatest managers in British football history, leaving an indelible legacy at Manchester United.
Ferguson left, his head held high in 2013 and they entered another patchy period of uncertainty with firstly, David Moyes taking over. They then had a string of managers, Louis Van Gaal, the ‘chosen one’ José Mourinho, Ole Gunnar Solskjær, and Michael Carrick before Erik Ten Hag was appointed in 2022. They picked up the EFL Cup that year against Newcastle. We can only speculate whether Ten Hag will lead man Utd into a new golden period!
Signed Manchester United Shirts
Interestingly for a short period around 1881 the club played in green and gold jerseys after a local cashmere supplier supported them financially! From 1887 the club has been playing in their distinctive red and white shirts which, although the design has changed over the years led them to being referred to as The Red Devils.
The kit has was manufactured by Umbro for many years from 1945, giving way to Admiral in the 1975-6 season. The distinctive Adidas logo took over in 1980-81 with sponsorship arriving in the form of Sharp, whose logo was clearly printed on the front of Man Utd shirts in the 1982-83 season. This persisted until 2000 when Vodaphone signed Manchester United in a £30m deal. Many have followed including AIG who signed Man Utd in 2006 and Teamviewer who took over from Chevrolet, having signed the club for £235m in 2021.
The Infamous Grey Shirt
An ‘invisible grey’ shirt which Manchester United sported during the ’95-’96 season, worn by Eric Cantona, was sold at auction for £12,000. Players complained that they couldn’t see each other against the crowd. Manager Alex Ferguson had the shirts changed to blue and white, and the team eventually won the league title.
Original signed Manchester United shirts are highly collectable as you can imagine, and jerseys spanning the club’s history can command very high sums! The famous red, white shirts with black shorts and socks has been seen in many a cup final over the years but non-more memorable than the famous 1968 win against Benfica in the European Cup. They won 4 -1, being only the second UK team to win the trophy.
